Майкл Борис Буравой (англ. Michael Boris Burawoy; 15 июня 1947 — 3 февраля 2025) — британский социолог, наиболее известный как автор книги «Производство согласия: Изменения в процессе труда в условиях монополистического капитализма» — исследования по труду и его организации, переведённого на несколько языков — и как ведущий инициатор публичной социологии. Представитель социологического марксизма и мир-системного анализа, изучал классовое сознание с точки зрения теорий Пьера Бурдьё и Антонио Грамши.

Президент Американской социологической ассоциации (2004 году) и профессор Калифорнийского университета в Беркли (1988–2025). Вице-президент Комитета национальных ассоциаций Международной социологической ассоциации (2006—2010). На XVII Всемирном социологическом конгрессе был избран президентом Международной социологической ассоциации (2010—2014)

Биография

Родился 15 июня 1947 года в семье химиков.

Окончил Манчестерскую грамматическую школу.

В 1968 году получил бакалавра гуманитарных наук по математике в Колледже Христа Кембриджского университета.

Работал исследователем в горнодобывающем консорциуме «Anglo American PLC».

В 1972 году получил магистра гуманитарных наук по социологии в Университете Замбии.

Получил доктора философии по социологии в Чикагском университете, защитив диссертацию по антропологии промышленных рабочих Чикаго, которую затем издал в виде монографии «Производство согласия: Изменения в процессе труда в условиях монополистического капитализма».

В 1976–1982 годы — ассистент-профессор, в 1982–1988 годы — ассоциированный профессор, с 1988 года — профессор и заведующий (в 1996–1998 и в 2000–2002 годы) кафедрой социологии Калифорнийского университета в Беркли.

Скончался 3 февраля 2025 года от травм, полученных в результате наезда автомобиля.

Научная деятельность

Помимо Замбии, проводил социологические исследования на рабочих местах промышленного рабочего класса, устраиваясь на рабочие профессии на предприятиях Чикаго, поздней кадаровской Венгрии и постсоветской России (Сыктывкара). Его методом исследования, как правило, является включённое наблюдение. На основании своих исследований на рабочих местах он анализировал природу постколониализма, организацию «государственного социализма» и проблемы переходного периода к свободнорычночному капитализму.

Социолог А. Ф. Филиппов отмечает: «У нас имя Буравого прочно связано с идеей публичной социологии. Он с ней носился по всему миру, в то и к нам заезжал. Это было замечательное начинание. Конечно, в высшем смысле оно провалилось. А что не провалилось? Уже давно стало ясно, что социология не будет (не социологи будет) давать обществу его язык преимущественного самоописания. Ну и тогда остается либо информационное обслуживание и мониторинг, либо вот эта самая публичная функция соучастия в производстве согласия. В некотором роде это социологическое "назад к Канту", то есть Конту или даже социалистам его времени. Только вместо предложения вселенской позитивистской церкви — скромное и достойное соучастие в публичных делах. Как это часто бывает с пишущими в наши дни по-английски, в странах, где сложная мысль и сложная речь не приветствуются, Буравой был, видимо, намного умнее и своих широко известных текстов, и тех, кто подхватывал его слоган на лету».
